Glasswing and Mythos: Clarity and Meaning in AI Naming

Project Glasswing is Anthropic’s cybersecurity initiative, designed to identify and help address critical software vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. The effort brings together a flock of trusted partners – including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft – to achieve this goal.

At the center of the initiative is Claude Mythos, an AI model built to uncover and analyze complex issues, including those that might otherwise go undetected. Such powerful entities deserve great names, and Glasswing and Claude Mythos more than deliver.

Not Just a Flight of Fancy

“Glasswing” is what naming practitioners call an arbitrary name – a real-word reference applied in a new context. Like Apple or Amazon, it doesn’t describe function directly; instead, it invites meaning through association.

The reference here is the Glasswing butterfly, a gorgeous Lepidoptera known for its translucent wings – an adaptation that allows it to move through the world almost unseen. The metaphor aligns closely with the project’s mission: revealing hidden vulnerabilities within complex, opaque systems.

But the wings are not just clear. They are structured veined, patterned, highly ordered – a detail Anthropic echoes in its visual treatment of the project.

Glasswing, however, is exactly the kind of name that focus groups would most likely reject: too delicate, too abstract, too poetic, insufficiently “cyber.” Such an assessment would miss the mark. In a tech landscape saturated with hard-edged names, Project Glasswing stands apart.

Meaning, Not Mechanism

Then there’s Mythos or, more precisely, Claude Mythos. While “Mythos” is evocative on its own, partnering it with “Claude” strengthens brand association and contributes to a stronger trademark protection.

Derived from the Greek word for story or narrative, the name points to something deeper than surface-level information. It suggests interpretation – how facts are organized into understanding.

That makes it a fitting name for the AI model at the heart of Project Glasswing. Making vulnerability visible is only part of the task. Of equal importance is understanding how that vulnerability behaves and what should be done about it. Together, the names form a powerful pairing:

  • Glasswing is about visibility – revealing what is hidden
  • Mythos is about meaning – making sense of what’s revealed

One makes the invisible visible. The other makes the visible understandable.

For these reasons, Project Glasswing and Claude Mythos stand as exemplary monikers in contemporary AI naming – proof that naming, at its best, is not mere ornament, but a vehicle for adding value to a product, service, or company.

As the Russian writer and devoted butterfly scholar, Vladimir Nabokov, once observed,

“I discovered in nature the non-utilitarian delights that I sought in art.”

The same might be said of naming at its best: what appears non-utilitarian is often where the deepest meaning resides.
